Big Tree by Brian Selznick Reading this book was an unforgettable journey—both as a teacher and as someone who believes in the transformative power of storytelling.
Initially, the 528 pages felt overwhelming (much like they might to 7- or 8-year-olds!), but the phrase “Roots and Wings” kept me going. It aligns so beautifully with my school’s mission at GESS: giving students roots to ground them and wings to soar into the world.
This story, told from the perspective of two seed siblings, Louise and Merwin, is a tale of resilience, growth, and finding your place. Their journey after being released from their mama tree during a forest fire is a poignant metaphor for courage and community.
One of my favorite quotes? “You’re very small, but small things grow. And you can work with others. That’s called a community. And in your community, you can feel safe and loved.”
And if you haven’t heard the audiobook narrated by Meryl Streep, you’re missing out! Her voice, paired with sound effects and music, made this tale even more magical.
This hopeful and heartwarming story is a must-read for anyone who loves nature, adventure, and stories that touch the soul.
