Book Sharing: “Jacob’s Missing Book” by Sarah Hoffman, Ian Hoffman, and Chris Case🌟
As I read “Jacob’s Missing Book”to my class, there was a collective gasp from the kids—they couldn’t believe that books could actually be banned. Jacob’s favourite book is “And Tango Makes Three”, a story about two male penguins hatching an egg together. He cherishes this book and wants to share it with his friends, especially to help him understand his friend Emily’s family. But when the book goes missing from the library, Jacob is left confused and upset.
Jacob and his friends soon learn that the book was removed because “some people are unhappy with the books we have in our library and our classrooms.” This revelation strikes a chord with the children, leading them to creatively reenact the story on the playground, raising chicks as penguins do.
It’s disheartening that some people feel the need to take books away from kids simply because they disagree with the stories. But this book handles the topic of book banning in a gentle, approachable way, showing how deeply it affects children. Kids notice when the books they love disappear, and they often form strong bonds with these stories, just like Jacob does in this tale.
“Jacob’s Missing Book” does an excellent job of helping children understand both the impact of book banning and the beauty of diverse families. The colorful illustrations and the lovable characters bring this important message to life. Every family should share this story with their children—it’s a great way to introduce young ones to the concept of book removal and the importance of inclusivity.
It’s unfortunate that we need books like this to explain why some stories about untraditional families are being taken away, but “Jacob’s Missing Book”is a must-read for helping children navigate these complex issues. 📚❤️
