Kareem Between

Attending the NCTE conference last year was unforgettable, but the moment that truly stood out for me was discovering “Kareem Between” during a panel discussion. I only managed to skim a few chapters at the event, but those glimpses left such a deep impression that I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Fast forward to my return to Singapore—I finally got my hands on the book, I binge-read it during my commutes to and from school, finishing it in just 3 days. That’s how special this book is. It’s one of those rare reads that stays with you long after you turn the last page. Shaifa Saltagi Safadi has created something truly extraordinary, and it’s no surprise that this book feels absolutely deserving of a National Book Award.

Told in breathtaking free verse, the story follows Kareem, a Syrian American middle schooler trying to find his place. His struggles to balance football aspirations, familial obligations, and cultural identity had me rooting for him the entire way. Kareem’s voice is so authentic and raw—it felt like I was right there with him, navigating the ups and downs of middle school, identity, and belonging.

It was heartbreaking and eye-opening, yet handled with so much grace. Safadi’s storytelling shines in every line.

Oh, and did I mention the NFL fun facts sprinkled throughout?

Even as someone who doesn’t follow football, I found them fascinating! They brought lightness to the narrative and tied beautifully to Kareem’s love for the game.

“Kareem Between” is more than just a book for me; it’s an experience I’ll always cherish. Highly, highly recommen
