Magnolia Wu Unfolds It All

Just finished reading “Magnolia Wu Unfolds It All” by Chanel Miller, and I can’t help but share how much this book touched my heart!

This charming story follows two adventurous nine-year-old girls in the vibrant landscape of New York City as they embark on a delightful quest to connect missing socks with their owners. Through their journey, Miller bravely addresses important topics like friendship, family dynamics, bullying, homesickness, racism, and anti-immigrant rhetoric, all with a thoughtful and nuanced approach.

At just ten years old, Magnolia spends her days at the Bing Qi Ling Bubbles Laundromat run by her parents. With her only friend having moved away, she reluctantly braces for a lonely birthday party. But when her mother’s friend, Mrs. Lam, brings her daughter Iris—a newcomer from California—Magnolia is determined to show her all the wonders of their neighborhood.

As they bond over their shared experiences, Magnolia’s passion for adventure ignites when she decides to investigate the mystery of her bulletin board filled with lonely socks. With Iris by her side, they engage with neighborhood business owners, running errands and uncovering clues that bring them closer to the owners of those mismatched socks.
