This delightful book has sparked lively conversations both at home and in my classroom! Growing up, sweet soy sauce was a staple in my meals, especially drizzled over rice and curry—a taste I cherish to this day. Now, being married to someone of Chinese heritage, I’ve come to appreciate the diverse traditions and recipes surrounding soy sauce, and this book beautifully encapsulates that cultural richness.

Soy Sauce! is an engaging story that introduces young readers to the history, significance, and process of making this essential condiment. The narrative flows effortlessly, combining warmth and simplicity, while offering an enjoyable glimpse into a staple that connects cultures across the globe. My students loved discussing the sauces they use at home—Korean, Japanese, and more—and we marveled at the variety of flavors and traditions associated with soy sauce.

For instance, did you know that in some cultures, families brew soy sauce when a child is born, reserving it as a wedding gift? Or that Japanese soy sauce includes toasted wheat for a distinctive umami flavor, while Korean versions add chiles and jujubes for a spicy-sweet kick? And then there’s the Indonesian style, thick and aromatic with star anise—definitely on my list to find during my next international grocery store trip!

This book is a treasure for kids of all backgrounds, but especially for those with Asian heritage. It celebrates food as a unifying force, reminding us that the sauces on our tables—whether soy, teriyaki, or even European varieties like Worcestershire—tell stories of history and tradition. Plus, the vibrant illustrations of children cooking with soy sauce and savoring their meals add an extra dash of joy and inspiration.
