✨📚 What a perfect read-aloud book for the end of the year! 📚✨
When I read “The Spell of a Story” by Mariajo Illustrajo to my class, the first sentence made my kids gasp and exclaim, “What???? No way!!!” It was the last day of school, and the line went, “Finally, it’s the last day of school. That means no more waking up early, no more pop quizzes, and most importantly, no more reading.” Their animated response reassured me that I’m doing something right!
“The Spell of a Story” is a beautifully illustrated children’s book about a young girl who discovers a newfound passion for books. It’s ideal for kids who haven’t yet found their right book, and perfect for parents or preschool teachers to share with their little ones.
The story begins on the last day of school with a homework assignment to read a book over the holidays. Initially disheartened because she hates reading, the girl’s mother gently nudges her to the library. There, she selects a book and reluctantly starts reading, only to be swept away on a magical adventure.
What her mum did was set an intention that allowed her to create her own reading pathways. I’ve seen firsthand how supporting children’s goals boosts motivation and improves reading performance. Encouraging them to choose their own intentions for making meaning is a powerful act that fosters both agency and independence. Donalyn Miller always said that practice truly makes permanent, and if we want our students to excel, they need ample opportunities to practice reading. Reading is a skill that improves with practice, and my students are a testament to this as they eagerly dive into their books.
I absolutely adored this book from beginning to end. It’s such a read. Books really do feel like kindred spirits – there’s a one for everyone, a captivating tale that can truly enchant and transport you into the world of reading.
