To See An Owl

Reading To See an Owl by Caldecott-winning illustrator Matthew Cordell to my class was an enchanting experience. This beautifully illustrated story follows Janie, a young birdwatcher with an unwavering love for owls. Despite their elusive nature, Janie’s determination and patience guide her on a heartfelt journey to catch a glimpse of these magnificent creatures.

Cordell’s illustrations bring the adventure to life with stunning detail.

The journal-style artwork—resembling something a child might create—invites readers to step into Janie’s world. It felt as if we, too, were part of the quest, walking quietly through forests and peering into the twilight sky, hoping for the magic of an owl sighting.

My students were captivated by Janie’s perseverance, and the book sparked a meaningful connection with Jane Yolen’s Owl Moon. Both stories beautifully capture the quiet wonder and patience required to see an owl, immersing readers in a shared love for nature and discovery. We even discussed what it might feel like to go owl-watching ourselves. Their excitement and insights added a special layer to the story, making it all the more magical.

This book is a treasure for fostering curiosity, patience, and a love for nature. Highly recommended for classrooms and families alike.
