Spotlight: We Are Lion Dancers by Benson Shum
My class has been absolutely captivated by We Are Lion Dancers as we get ready for the upcoming lion dance performance at our school! This delightful picture book not only introduces the vibrant tradition of lion dancing but also carries an inspiring message about curiosity, perseverance, and the beauty of learning from others.
The story follows two curious siblings who, during their kung fu lessons, are drawn to the lively lion dancers rehearsing nearby. Their fascination with the intricate lion costume leads to a funny and heartfelt moment when they try it on (and realize it’s way too big!). Instead of feeling discouraged, they’re welcomed into the experience by the lion dancers, who invite them to play the instruments and be part of the performance.
This act of encouragement and inclusion is so touching—and it all leads to a surprise ending that celebrates their enthusiasm and effort. My students LOVE this book! Beyond its vibrant illustrations and engaging story, it’s sparked meaningful conversations about embracing curiosity, appreciating cultural traditions, and understanding that everyone has something unique to contribute, no matter how small they may feel at first.
We Are Lion Dancers is more than a story—it’s a reminder that trying new things, even when they seem challenging, can lead to unexpected joy and growth.
